Her contribution to the field of contemporary art, especially sculpture, has been incomparable. Fritsch’s sculptures over the years have the same sense of awe and dizzying attraction. Titled Rattenkönig, the Rat King, It was an uneasy sculpture in which a group of giant rodents were crouched in a circle with their tails knotted together. Her work has gained a lot of attention since the 1999 edition of the Venice Biennale curated by Harald Szeemann where Fritsch’s massive piece filled the main room at the Central Pavilion. We all remember Katharina Fritsch’s giant blue cockerel on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.
